Beware of flash floods, heavy rain

Residents warned to be careful in the rain.

The Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) is on high alert due to the heavy rains that are pouring across the metro.

Emergency Services and Disaster management teams have put together response plans including placing swift water rescue crew on standby for the duration of this period of rain.

Over the past week, the metro has experienced continuous rainfall which has led to water saturation and as a result flash flooding in different areas.

DEMS officials are continuously monitoring and assessing areas prone to flooding on an hourly bases.

The weather forecast from the South African Weather Services (SAWS) is closely monitored for new developments.

In addition to this, the metro is involved with the provision of emergency shelters and relief aid to the communities affected by flooding.

Residents within the metro are advised to be on high alert, especially those in the low lying areas.

Should there be any life threatening emergencies, they are advised to call the emergency call centre on 011 458-0911 or National emergency number 10177 or 107 in the event of flash floods

Ensure that you have the emergency call centre numbers at all times and that they are saved on your cellphone.

Speak clearly on the phone when reporting an emergency.

Provide the operators with all the necessary details required.

Do not end the conversation until all questions are answered.
