Break the silence during Reproductive Health Month

IFAASA encourages people to go for a fertility assessment this month.

Reproductive Health Month takes place annually, from February 1 to 29.

For the second year running, IFAASA (Infertility Awareness Association of South Africa) is “Breaking the Silence” around the stigma of infertility.

Their theme for this year is “Will Your Fertility Stand the Test of Time?”

IFAASA is offering an educational and awareness campaign for couples to fast track their fertility assessment.

For years, infertility has been a taboo and socially unacceptable subject for any couple trying to conceive.

Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive or carry a pregnancy to term after 12 months of trying to conceive.

If you are over the age of 35, the time of trying to conceive is reduced to six months.

There are two types of infertility:

  •  Primary infertility, where a couple has never had a baby.
  •  Secondary infertility, where a couple is unable to conceive after they have already had a child.

It is important to see a fertility specialist for a complete fertility assessment.

This can assist couples to make an informed decision on the journey they choose to take, whether it is fertility treatment, adoption or living with involuntary childlessness.

IFAASA not only encourages couples experiencing infertility challenges, but also the general population to educate themselves about infertility.

Pregnancy is a privilege that not every couple is afforded.

“Everyone needs to be supportive of these families and couples struggling with infertility, because they are going through a huge emotional and financial challenge.

“We are delighted to have the backing and support of South Africa’s leading fertility clinics in driving awareness of infertility,” said Meggan Zunckel, chief executive officer of IFAASA.

During the campaign IFAASA highlights the importance of a fertility assessment by a fertility specialist.

There are usually physical or biological factors which cause infertility and medical treatment will be beneficial.

Break the silence and fast track your fertility assessment – there is no time like the present.
