Metro inaugurates its junior councillors

Youngsters learn all about the workings of council.

The beginning of Ekurhuleni’s junior councillors’ term of office has begun in earnest following the inauguration of 99 junior councillors in Boksburg, last Saturday.

The young leaders used the occasion to pledge their commitment to serve the residents of Ekurhuleni with dignity and pride.

The newly sworn in councillors were due to hold their first council meeting on February 11 at the Boksburg Civic Centre at 2pm to tackle governance issues affecting the youth.

The newly elected chairmen of the oversight committees are, from left: Chair of chairs, Celcio Moloi, chairman for social development, Nandi Mokgatle, chairman for sports, recreation, arts and culture, Chene Grobler, chairman for campaigns and fund-raising, Jade Smith, chairman for education Tselisehang Mahloko, chairman for community safety, Somila Joka, chairman for environment Kreolin Naidoo and chairman for Health Zakithi Thomo with Xoliswa Dilata and Dr Miriam Altman from the National Planning Commission.

Speaking after the inauguration and election of committee chairs, the junior speaker of council, Clr Khanyisile Sponzwa, called for the council to work in unity.

“We ought to work together and be examples that both our parents and residents of Ekurhuleni can be proud of.

“I pray that during our term of office, we will work diligently with no division, even in the midst of expected pluralism of ideas in council,” Ponzwa said.

The establishment of the junior council is championed by Ekurhuleni’s speaker of council, Clr Patricia Khumalo.

The speaker of council, Patricia Khumalo engages the Ekurhuleni junior councillors during a breakaway session where the chairmen met and interacted with members of their oversight committees at the Boksburg City Hall, last Saturday.

Khumalo believes that a nation that doesn’t invest in its young people is walking into a trap of a doomed future.

“These young people will acquire knowledge of public affairs and an understanding of how government operates, and this will ensure that we have a feeder system of great leaders who are able to resolve conflicts through negotiation,” she said.
