Lambton fire hydrants operational – says DEMS

Lambton residents claim fire hydrants are still not working properly.

Following a series of articles the GCN did last year on the fire hydrants in Lambton, the metro claimed it is not their duty to maintain the hydrants.

The metro instead stated that it was the responsibility of the Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) to maintain the hydrants in the area.

The GCN recently received a call from a Lambton resident claiming that most of the hydrants from First to Fifth avenues in Lambton were still not working properly, and many are filled with sand.

The GCN contacted William Ntladi, media liaison officer for DEMS to confirm if it was the duty of emergency services to maintain these fire hydrants and, if so, why are these ones not being repaired and/or regularly checked?

“All the hydrants around Lambton are in working condition,” he said.

“One critical point to highlight is that they are underground systems which are subjected to vandalism.

“The hydrant covers are being tampered with and this challenge has been identified in other areas as well.”

Ntladi stated that the other relevant departments, involved in the maintenance of the hydrants, were being contacted to weigh-in on the matter, this comment had not been received at the time of publication.
