ATM explosions a concern for police

Report damaged or suspicious looking ATMs to your local police station.

The number of ATM explosions has increased over the past few years.

With this in mind the SAPS have compiled a list of things you need to remember when dealing with a damaged or suspicious looking ATM.

Report the ATM to your local police station if:

q An ATM has been damaged or if any unknown items protrude from it.

q If smoke or flames are visible at or in the machine, as this is a sure sign of a pending explosion, move away from the ATM immediately before reporting it.

q If there is suspicious activity or people at or near an ATM.

In the event of an ATM explosion it is important to remember that once the charges have been activated there is nothing that can be done to deactivate the explosives.

Shrapnel and debris from an explosion can travel for several hundred metres, for this reason people must be moved away as far as possible and/or take cover behind something solid.
