Emergency services on high alert for flooding

Emergency services in the metro are warning people to be aware of the possibility of flash floods.

The South African Weather Services (SAWS) is warning of flash floods due to heavy rain expected today, in the Gauteng province.

Localised flooding is anticipated in different areas around the province.

As heavy rain is expected, rivers, canals and streams might experience a high volume of water, which might result in flash floods.

The Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services Department (DEMS) would also like to caution residents in the metro be on high alert for such occurrences.

Low lying areas are always subjected to flooding and people are advised to take extra precautions.

Residents are advised to take the following safety tips into account:

Residents are advised to listen to the radio and watch television for warnings on the weather and to adhere to the safety tips from the officials.

DEMS is always prepared to timeously respond to all incidents within the municipality.

Communities are also expected to assist in mitigating the occurrences of emergencies.

Over and above this, DEMS is also on high alert for any emergencies around the metro.

Speak clearly on the phone when reporting an emergency.

Provide the operators with all the necessary details required.

Do not end the conversation until all questions are answered.
