SSP’s Nthabiseng Xashimba aces matric

Thanks to the Student Sponsorship Programme a Katlehong girl’s dreams of studying medicine are set to take flight.

Nthabiseng Xashimba describes herself as a curious young woman who loves to learn.

This love and desire to excel has enabled her to pass her matric with seven subject distinctions with an overall aggregate of 85 per cent.

This phenomenal youngster obtained distinctions in English, Afrikaans, mathematics, life science, physical science, life orientation and dramatic arts.

Nthabiseng set herself the goal of achieving triple honours at school when she was in Grade Eight and has never lost sight of it.

This goal led to her working hard and striving for excellence, obtaining full honours for academics, culture and sport at St Martin’s School from Grade Nine in 2012 through to Grade 11 and now matric.

Nthabiseng was awarded the prestigious Student Sponsorship Programme (SSP) scholarship in 2010 when she was identified at Monde Primary School.

She lives with her unemployed single mother and her little brother in Magagula section, Katlehong.

She attributes her success and achievement to her mother Nozuko, SSP and St Martin’s School who have always believed in her even when she did not believe in herself.

Nthabiseng went from being an introvert in Grade Eight, to being a young woman with her own opinions who participated in individual and group public speaking events.

She seized the opportunities that were presented to her and participated in sports such as tennis and hockey.

Being committed to the SSP ethos of developing leaders through academic excellence and impacting lives, she made time to tutor some of her fellow boarders whilst fulfilling her prefect duties.

Nthabiseng has been accepted to study medicine at both Stellenbosch University and at the University of Cape Town.

She aims to specialise in ophthalmology inspired by her mother’s partial loss of sight.

SSP is thrilled to have been able to impact Nthabiseng’s life through the scholarship.

SSP offers more than a scholarship, but changes the lives of the scholars, their families and their school.

The organisation’s comprehensive core support programmes ensure that the scholars are able to perform optimally through the scholar programme officers, holiday programmes and mentorship programmes.
