Metro relaxes water restrictions

The water restrictions in the metro have been relaxed slightly.

The metro is lifting the water restrictions which were executed last month, to curb the water shortages experienced throughout the province.

Cooperation by residents and business consumers, as well as the advent of seasonal rainfall which has cooled temperatures, have ensured that reservoirs remained stable over the past weeks.

“Reservoir levels are currently operating above 70 per cent and, therefore, we are in a position to lift the total ban on irrigation and filling of swimming pools,” said metro spokesman Themba Gadebe.

“Instead, we will be implementing time-bound restrictions, whereby no irrigation activities should take place between 8am and 4pm.”

Gadebe, however, cautioned consumers to remain active partners in water conservation and to utilise the scarce resource sparingly.

“Although the situation has improved, we still urge residents to abide by water conservation measures, such as refraining from utilising hosepipes to water their gardens, wash their cars and paved outdoor areas, especially between 8am and 4pm,” emphasised Gadebe.

Consumers are also urged to repair leaks on their properties, and to report those that require the municipality’s attention to the municipal services call centre, on 086 054 3000.
