Scaw looks to the future of the community

Making a notable contribution to social transformation through CSI initiatives.

The Scaw Metal Group, a leading South African steel manufacturer, has made a valuable contribution to community upliftment over the last three years, with investments totalling more than R5-million in the areas of education, environment and sports.

The company, based in Germiston, is involved in a number of projects and initiatives.

The Epworth Children’s Village is one of the beneficiaries of Scaw’s aid.

The dropout rate in all the schools chosen by Epworth and the company was reduced from just over 50 per cent to five per cent, and teen pregnancies from 251 in 2013 to eight by September, this year.

This has been achieved through conducting workshops for more than 5 000 parents and hosting motivational talks for more than 15 000 students.

Another initiative undertaken by Scaw is The Food and Trees project, as the growing demand to be environmentally conscious saw this collaboration.

Katlehong benefited tremendously and is a fully educated community, with 5 000 trees planted and three food gardens set up in schools within the community.

The Adopt-a-School Foundation is an initiative that restores classrooms, resources equipment and facilitates workshops that empower both parents and educators with further skills development.

The Muhloli Secondary school received renovations to its science lab, which led to a rise in the number of students participating in the course.

Group executive for public affairs and communications, Dudu Ndlovu, said: “We owe our remarkable results to the credible partnerships and collaboration with communities at large.”

Before committing to a project, Scaw’s corporate social investment committee evaluates the requirements of the project, ensuring that the contribution is sustainable and will make a tangible difference to communities.

Scaw Metals Group CEO Markus Hannemann said: “The results of our social investment efforts are a good example of our employees’ commitment to going beyond their roles within the organisation.”

The sports development programme comprises cricket, soccer and athletics, while echoing Scaw Metal’s passion for youth and employee upliftment.

Through providing skilled coaching, sporting equipment and adequate support structures, the programme has ensured that participants excel and reach their full potential.

This programme has produced star runners, such as Simon Malindi, who won medals in both the prestigious Comrades and Two-Oceans marathons.

The athletics team has been chosen to represent Central Gauteng at the National Athletics Championships.

Scaw Metals realises that credible partnerships are essential in engaging with the community.

It will continue to work with partners that share the vision for social transformation through initiatives that empower communities and drive social upliftment through its developmental programmes in the areas of education, sport and environmental issues.
