Pha Real Voices share their whirlwind experience

All nerves were forgot as the Pha Real Voices began to sing.

Fifteen lucky Colin Mann Primary School students, now known nationally as the Pha Real Voices, wowed the crowd at the Ticket-Pro Dome, when they recently took the stage with Pharrell Williams.

The GCN first met the young stars a week after they were announced as the winners of the My School Sing With Us competition (see GCN, September 11).

The grand prize saw the children performing on stage at a private concert for 5 000 Woolworths WRewards customers.

The group shared their whirlwind experience with the GCN from early rehearsals at the school, where they met and trained with the Soweto Gospel Choir.

The Pha Real Voices then travelled to Springs, where they were told which song they would be performing and had their first wardrobe fitting.

The group described the song “Freedom” as difficult to master, but they enjoyed every moment of rehearsals in the Springs Theatre.

They were then whisked to Fourways for the final preparations for the big night, which included sound checks, laying their backing track, learning their dance moves, getting used to the stage at the Ticket-Pro Dome and, of course, meeting Pharrell.

The children were speechless when the Grammy Award-winning musician walked out on stage.

When asked what it was like to meet him in person the group replied, together, “Amazing”, and described him as a friendly, soft-spoken man.

The Pha Real Voices were nervous as they headed on stage, but once they started singing and dancing all the nerves disappeared.

They all agree that the experience is one about which they will tell their grandchildren.
