Man shoots at police, runs away

Man opens fire to avoid being searched.

A man opened fire on police after they asked to search him, on Thursday.

At about 6.40am, Elsburg SAPS members were patrolling in Sapele Street, Elsburg, conducting “Operation Duty Calls”, when they came across a suspicious-looking man.

“The police stopped the man with the intention of searching him.

“He refused to be searched and, without uttering any further words, he drew a firearm and started shooting at the police officers,” said Const Daphney Phooko, communications officer for the Elsburg SAPS.

“The police officers retaliated by shooting back at the suspect.”

After the suspect had emptied his magazine, he threw his firearm on top of the roof of the house he was standing beside and tried to run away.

He fell and sustained injuries to his upper body.

The firearm used to commit the crime was found to be unlicensed, with the serial number filed off and with a magazine that can load 15 rounds.

The 34-year-old suspect was arrested and detained at the Elsburg Police Station.

He will appear in the Germiston Magistrates Court soon, to face charges of attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The Elsburg police are continuing with the investigation.
