Pedestrian knocked down in Katlehong, driver flees

Driver arrested after hit-and-run.

An Ethiopian national recently knocked over a pedestrian at about 6.15am, in Katlehong, and then fled the scene of the accident.

Taxi drivers who witnessed the accident chased after the Nissan 1400 bakkie, but were outpaced by it.

Fortunately, the taxi drivers managed to jot down the registration number of the bakkie.

The accident happened at the intersection of Masakane and Masango roads, in Mavimbela section, Katlehong.

Meanwhile, the 30-year-old male pedestrian was rushed to Simon Thelle Mogoerane Hospital, in Vosloorus, for medical treatment, due to the serious injuries he sustained.

EMPD Katlehong precinct officers spotted the vehicle on Msomi Drive, in Maphanga section, km from where the accident occurred.

“Trembling behind the wheel, with his damaged vehicle parked on the premises of a panelbeating shop, the driver admitted to having hit the pedestrian,” said Wilfred Kgasago, spokesman for the EMPD.

“His explanation for fleeing the scene was that he feared for his life, as those who witnessed the accident wanted to attack him.”

Tell-tale signs in the form of damage to the vehicle confirmed that it was, in fact, involved in an accident.

“The Nissan 1400 had front bumper and grill damage, a broken left side mirror and a cracked windscreen.

“The vehicle was impounded and the 35-year-old driver was charged with reckless and negligent driving, as well as failing to stop after being involved in an accident,” Kgasago said.

The docket was registered at the Katlehong Police Station.
