One patient had to be airlifted after an accident on the R21 in Kempton Park, this morning.

Traffic on the East Rand was severely affected this morning after a taxi accident in Kempton Park.

Thirteen people were left injured, two of them critically, after the taxi rolled on the R21 southbound in Kempton Park.

“ER24 paramedics, along with other services, arrived on scene to find the taxi lying in the fast lane of the highway.

“It was apparent to emergency workers that the vehicle had rolled multiple times,” said Russel Meiring, ER24 spokesman.

“On assessment, paramedics found that two woman had sustained critical injuries while 11 others had sustained only minor to moderate injuries.”

Paramedics began their treatment and provided the two critically injured patients with advanced life support interventions.

Once treated, one of the critically injured patients was airlifted by a medical helicopter to a nearby hospital while the second patient was transported by ambulance.

The remaining patients were treated for their injuries and transported to various hospitals for further assessment.

“The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations,” said Meiring.
