Drive-through assault

Women tell of late night assault.

Two women were left battered and bruised after a recent late night assault at a drive-through restaurant in Lambton.

“We were in the drive-through waiting area, waiting for our order when we were hit from behind.

“The bump felt intentional so we confronted the driver,” explained one of the victims of the assault, who does not wish to be named.

“The man in the vehicle got out and began to hit my friend and I.”

It is claimed that security guards did nothing to stop the assault, despite the women’s cries for help, while employees of the restaurant encouraged the attack.

“A man driving along Webber Road saw what was happening and stopped to help us,” the woman said.

The women believed that the dreadful ordeal was over but no sooner had the good Samaritan left than the man continued the assault.

“He continued to hit us and then, as suddenly as it started, he just left,” the victim said.

The women opened a case of assault with the Germiston police.

“As the women were able to get the number plate of the accused’s vehicle, the investigator was able to trace the address and visited the premises, but could not find him there,” explained the spokesman for the Germiston SAPS, WO André de Jager.

“A common assault case was opened, but we cannot arrest the suspect on this charge.

“All we can do is take his warning statement and the docket to the senior public prosecutor at the Germiston Magistrates Court for a decision, as to whether or not the case will be heard in court.

“The medical report of the complainant is still outstanding.”

De Jager added that if people come upon such an incident they must try not to engage with the other party; they should try to avoid the confrontation completely.

The GCN attempted to get comment from the restaurant’s head office, regarding the alleged behaviour of their staff, but no response was forthcoming by the time of going to press.
