Drunken mom abandons baby

Woman tells police she doesn’t want baby before leaving it under tree.

After a recent drunken night out, a 28-year-old mother brought her 18-month-old baby to the Primrose Police Station.

“The mother told officers that her child’s father was causing problems for her and that she did not want the child any more,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.

Officers tried to talk to the drunken woman, but she would not listen and left the station.

“Minutes after the woman left, a child’s crying was heard.

“The woman’s 18-month-old baby was found left under a tree close to the station,” Maome said.

The mother was found with a man only a few kilometres away from the station.

She was arrested and charged with child neglect.

The accused appeared in the Germiston Magistrate Court, where she was released on a warning.

The child has been taken to a place of safety.
