Sun goes down for smash-and-grab kingpin

Police nab and wound a known smash-and-grab kingpin in Primrose.

While detectives from the Primrose Police Station were taking case dockets to Germiston recently, they witnessed a smash-and-grab.

The attack took place on the corner of Shamrock and Pretoria roads.

“The detectives saw three men standing near the robot.

“Within a blink of an eye one of the men had smashed a vehicle’s window and stolen a laptop out of the vehicle,” explained Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.

The man ran towards the Delport informal settlement and the officers gave chase on foot, cornering him in a shack.

“When the man was cornered he produced a sharp object and tried to stab one of the officers.

“A second officer drew his firearm and shot the man in the right leg,” said Maome.

Police retrieved the laptop during the man’s arrest.

“The 25-year-old suspect is a well-known smash-and-grab kingpin; he was recently released from jail,” added Maome.

The man was taken to the Tembisa Hospital under police guard.

He will appear in the Germiston Magistrates Court when he is released from hospital.
