Vesna and Tatijana put their best foot forward for childhood cancer

Local sisters raise awareness for cancer.

Lambton sisters Vesna (11) and Tatijana Ignjatov (9) have been named finalists in the Miss SA Schools Ambassadors Competition.

The competition aims at empowering young SA school girls with the necessary knowledge and skills to become a positive role model.

The girls were nominated to participate in the competition and were very excited when they received the news.

As part of the pageant the two will have to dedicate themselves to raising funds for a charity of their choosing.

The sisters chose to support The Little Fighters Cancer Trust as it is a cause close to their hearts after the two lost a grandmother to cancer this year.

The Little Fighters Cancer Trust was formed in 2010 by Tania Goslett and Thomas Engela and aims to relieve some of the heartache and difficulties faced by childhood cancer affected families.

With no government funding or international grants, the group relies solely on public and corporate support to keep doing what they do.

To support the charity Tatijana and Vesna will be hosting a number of projects including selling golden support ribbons at their school, Bishop Bavin School, in Bedfordview, as well as, holding a competition that will see students try and guess how many sweets are in a jar.

The school has also donated R10 000 to the The Little Fighters Cancer Trust in support of the sisters.

In addition Tatijana made a dance video to promote cancer awareness (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_Y6oPLQHVQ), while Vesna plans to visit several nursery schools in Germiston to talk about childhood cancer and the trust.

She will also be putting up posters from the Little Fighters Cancer Trust in hospitals in the area and placing information pamphlets in doctors’ rooms.

Though the girls are giving their all they insist it is not about winning the competition.

“All we want is to give back, and if we achieve this then we feel complete and winners.

“We will not stop after the competition is over, we will continue to be little ambassadors for the Little Fighters Cancer Trust,” said Vesna.

If you would like to get involved and help, you can email the girl’s mother, Nina Ignjatov, on nina.ignjatov@gmail.com.

“Companies, schools and individuals are encouraged to donate,” said Nina.
