Bakkie crashes into back of truck on N12

Driver critically injured in accident.

The driver of a bakkie was critically injured when he collided with the back of a stationary truck in the middle lane of the N12 highway, on Thursday.

“The accident took place on the N12, northbound, just before the Elands interchange,” said William Ntladi, media liaison for the Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS).

“A rescue crew from the Alberton Fire Station responded to the call.”

The Jaws-of-life were used to free the driver, who was pinned behind the vehicle’s steering wheel.

“Once paramedics had stabilised the patient he was airlifted to Union Hospital for further medical care,” said Ntladi.

The driver of the truck was unharmed in the accident.

All three of the highway’s lanes were closed to traffic while paramedics saw to the wounded driver and SANRAL personnel cleaned-up the diesel spilled at the scene as a result of the accident.
