Stats reveal more people murdered in SA

National crime statistics released.

Murder, attempted murder, assault GBH, common robbery and robbery with aggravating circumstances are just some of the crimes which have shown an increase over the past year.

The national crime statistics reveal that, nationally, murder has increased by 4.6 per cent; attempted murder by 3.2 per cent; assault GBH by 0.1 per cent; common robbery by 2.7 per cent and robbery with aggravating circumstances by 8.5 per cent.

Drug-related crime has also shown a 2.4 per cent increase and sexual offences as a result of police action has increased by 34.3 per cent.

Carjacking has increased by 14.2 per cent and truck hijacking by 29.1 per cent.

Police Minister Nathi Nhleko and National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega are currently at the Parliamentary portfolio committee meeting where they are announcing the crime statistics for the last financial year (April 2014 to March 2015).

Gauteng has seen a 10.4 per cent increase in murder; an 8.7 per cent increase in attempted murder; a 1.6 per cent increase in assault GBH, an 11.6 per cent increase in common robbery and an 11.4 per cent increase in robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Drug-related crimes have shown a 5.9 per cent decrease and sexual offences as a result of police action have shown a 6.8 per cent increase.

Carjacking has increased by 13.4 per cent and truck hijacking by 47 per cent.

Nationally, the stats reveal that 782 more people in the country were murdered over the past financial year, compared to the previous one (17 805 murders were reported).

In Gauteng, 346 more people were murdered in the last financial year (from 3 325 in the April 2013 to March 2014 financial year to 3 671 this year).

On the plus side, the stats released state that nationally sexual offences have decreased by 5.4 per cent and common assault is down by 2.7 per cent.

In Gauteng, sexual offences have reportedly shown a 3.5 per cent decrease, with 9 902 cases being reported in this financial year, as opposed to the 10 264 reported the previous year.
