Morning hijacking and robbery spree halted by EMPD

EMPD arrest three, recover hijacked vehicle and firearm.

EMPD officers nailed three men who have allegedly been robbing and hijacking people in Germiston and Boksburg.

The arrests came after a couple was hijacked on Saturday morning at 6am by the three men in the Boksburg CBD.

The victims’ black VW Polo Vivo was taken at gun-point.

Following the activation of the hijacked vehicle’s tracking system EMPD Intervention Unit members tracked the vehicle down to Roodekop in Germiston, whereupon three suspects were arrested.

The hijacked Polo was found parked in Sunflower Street in Roodekop at about 6.30am.

“As the EMPD members approached the vehicle, three occupants hastily alighted and bolted on foot,” said Kobeli Mokheseng, EMPD media liaison officer.

“All the suspects were apprehended after attempting to escape by scaling a few fences in the area.”
A 9mm pistol with its serial number filed off, four handbags, three purses and 12 cellphones were found in the hijacked vehicle.

“The trio admitted that they have been robbing people in the Germiston and Boksburg areas,” Mokheseng said.

The suspects, aged between 20 and 30, were booked at the Alberton Police Station on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of an unlicenced firearm and possession of suspected stolen property.

They are expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court on Monday, September 28.
