High risk of load shedding for the rest of the week

Eskom short 1,500 megawatts while Mozambican power station undergoes maintenance.

Following a month of uninterrupted electricity supply Eskom  has announced there is a high risk of load shedding for the rest of the week.

For the first time in over 30 days, South Africans experienced power cuts on Monday night after the company implemented stage one load shedding.

It is reported that this was caused by a power station in Mozambique, which supplies the utility with about 1,500 megawatts, undergoing maintenance, as well as, a number of Eskom’s units being offline.

Due to the increased electricity demand and a shortage of generator sets, the power system will be limited for the next few days.

Eskom’s spokesman Khulu Phasiwe said, “We’ll continue to monitor the situation.

“But the risk for the rest of this week remains because we don’t have that 1,500 megawatts at this stage.”
