Woman unable to escape inferno, dies

Woman dies and man airlifted to hospital after taxi bursts into flames on N3.

A report from the scene of the N3 minibus accident indicates that it appears that the mechanical failure reported to have caused the accident, was in fact the rear wheel of the taxi coming off.

The accident took place this afternoon on the N3 highway, South bound, just before Grey Avenue.

It is reported that while sliding on the rear axel the vehicle burst into flames.

Exact detail to the cause however will remain a subject for police investigation.

“Netcare 911 paramedics and Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services arrived at the scene and found the vehicle engulfed in flames.

“All the passengers except one managed to escape from the inferno, she tragically died due to extensive burns,” said Chris Botha, media liaison for Netcare 911.

A second passenger, who suffered 80 per cent burns to his body, was airlifted to hospital by the Netcare one helicopter, while the remaining passengers were transported by ambulance to various hospitals in the area for the care that they required.
