Youngsters show how much they care

Local school gives ‘blessings’ to the needy.

Sinbad Nursery School and Crèche celebrated Mandela Day recently, in a very different way.

They collaborated with a church on a project called “Blessing in a Bag”.

The aim of the project was to fill brown paper bags with any necessities, as indicated on the bag (for example, oil, soup, canned food, etc.).

The project was started by Word and Life Church in Sunward Park, Boksburg, to help collect daily necessities for the less fortunate.

The church collects, sorts and distributes these brown paper bags to people who live in extreme poverty.

The Germiston-based school’s children and parents came together to make the project a success and collected goods between July 27 and August 6.

Each child was given a brown paper bag to fill.

The staff and teachers also participated in the project and all the bags came back filled.

The school collected 94 full bags in total, which were delivered to the church on August 14, by the Grade R pupils.

Chalene Steenkamp, the marketing coordinator, for the school said: “We regard Mandela Day as not only doing good on a specific day, but doing good things every day.

“There is so much need in our world today, and we have the responsibility to teach our children the value of caring and giving.

“We challenge other business to do something good for the community.”
