Alleged thief shot in the leg in escape attempt

Alleged car thief shot in Hollyhock Street.

Officers from the Primrose Police Station rushed to Hollyhock Street in Primrose, on Tuesday, after receiving information that a vehicle was being stripped for parts on the street.

“Our officers rushed to the scene,” explained Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police, to a GCN journalist on scene.

“Upon arrival they noticed a man, believed to be a lookout, who ran towards a Toyota Hilux bakkie that was reportedly being stripped for parts.”

They noticed a second man run from the bakkie and climb into a black Volkswagen Jetta.

Officers chased the lookout, “He was shot in the leg twice by an officer in his attempt to escape in the waiting getaway vehicle.

“He later told police that a man had been waiting in the vehicle,” said Maome.

The wounded 28-year-old was taken to a local hospital under police guard.

He was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle by the Primrose police.

This was linked to a case of vehicle theft opened with the Bedfordview SAPS.

The remaining two men are still at large.
