An EMPD Freeway Unit member ,busy with selection enforcement, last Thursday morning, along the N3 highway southbound, near the PPC Cement factory, stopped a VW Polo driver who was travelling in the emergency lane.
“Upon being requested to produce his driver’s licence, the driver took off on foot, leaving the vehicle and his female passenger,” said Wilfred Kgasago, spokesman for the metro.
“The female passenger, who claimed that the runaway driver was just a friend, was arrested.”
As soon as the driver ran, the officer became suspicious and did a thorough check of the vehicle, and the results came back positive – the VW Polo was a hijacked vehicle taken from the owner in Yeoville, at gunpoint in June, this year.
The arrested passenger, a woman in her mid-30s from Vosloorus, was locked up at the Germiston Police Station after being charged with possession of a stolen vehicle.
She was expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrates Court, last Friday.
Meanwhile, information at the disposal of the police is being used to track down the escaped driver.
