Update: On-and-off ramps to N17 closed at Wits Rifles

Two hospitalised after tanker rolls.

The on-and-off ramps to the N17 highway have been closed at Wits Rifles Road in Germiston due to a truck accident.

The articulated truck tanker carrying 25 000 litres of methanol is lying on its side on the N17 west on-ramp.

“The two occupants of the truck have been transported to hospital with minor injuries,” said William Ntladi, media liaison officer for the Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS).

“It appears that the driver lost control of the vehicle as he turned onto the on-ramp of the highway resulting in the vehicle rolling.”

Ntladi added that there is a small leakage of methanol but emergency teams were dealing swiftly with it.

“Tow trucks have arrived on scene and the process of lifting the truck back onto its wheels is starting,” he said.

Ntladi estimated that the Wits Rifles on-and-off ramps will be closed to traffic for a minimum of two hours as emergency services work on the scene.
