A security guard was killed and a police officer was rushed to hospital in a critical condition after a robbery in Leondale, on Thursday night.
It is alleged that five suspects, driving a BMW, arrived at a chemical plant and held a security officer at gun-point.
“Whilst they were driving around with him, other suspects broke into the company.
“A security guard responded to the alarm and a shoot-out ensued,” said Lieut-Col Katlego Mogale from the Gauteng provincial SAPS.
Police members on patrol in the area heard the gunshots and rushed to the scene.
“During the ensuing shoot-out, the security guard was fatally wounded and a police member was critically injured.
“One suspect was arrested and police recovered two cellphones, as well as an unlicensed firearm on the scene.”
The police have launched a manhunt to locate the other four suspects who fled the scene.
