Sewage flows down President Street

Why was sewage leak allowed to continue so long?

Consolidated Auction Group, a company situated in President Street, in the Germiston CBD, bore witness to a disturbing sight as sewage flowed down the street in front of its premises.

A staff member from the company explained that the sewage had been running down the street since July 2.

It was believed that the leak had started when workers in the area struck a pipe.

The GCN was on the scene last Friday, and witnessed sewage overflowing from a manhole in Exodus Street, and running down into President Street.

In response to a query from the GCN, Themba Gadebe, spokesman for the metro, explained that the leak was caused when a sewer overflowed.

“The matter was attended to on Monday, July 6, and the maintenance team has found debris in the line, hence the line could not flow.

“The metro plans to communicate such matters to members of the public during awareness campaigns, in an effort to reduce the frequency of this type of occurrence,” he said.
