The DA in Ekurhuleni has shared its disgust and dissatisfaction with the metro’s roads and transport department.
The DA states that the following are examples of the poor management:
- Failure to appoint repair and maintenance contractors for over two years, for many areas in Ekurhuleni.
- Failure to perform in terms of a metro tribunal ruling to proceed with the Eastleigh Spruit flood relief project.
- Failure to start a flood relief project for the Central Road bridge, which was approved in October 2013.
- Failed tender and award processes, plus inability of the recipients of the awards to perform.
- Failure to appoint and/or renew supplier contracts timeously for tar and diesel, affecting the department’s ability to function.
- Failure to do oversight on projects where many have come to a standstill due to cost over-runs.
- Failure by contractors to pay their sub-contractors, bringing work to a standstill.
- Failure by the department to spend grants and maintenance budgets.
- Failure to appoint cleaning contractors for the taxi ranks in the metro, resulting in filthy and unkempt commuter facilities.
- Failure to address the spiraling of unofficial taxi ranks, which are being established everywhere due to the poor planning and oversight by the metro.
Clr Bill Rundle, the DA shadow MMC for roads and transport, said: “I am sick and tired of quoting statistics, referring to specific events and making excuses for the lack of response by inept service delivery from the department.”
The DA has highlighted incidents of poor management which it deems to be negligence and recklessness in this department.
“Why was there no response or corrective interventions taken to address the myriad of problems that plagued this oversight? ” asked Rundle.
“The department is systematically being ruined on a daily basis.
“Why was there no accountability or consequences for this apparent dereliction of duty?”
The DA claims the real victims here are the residents, who will have to bear the brunt of poor service delivery.
