A suspect was shot during an attempted housebreaking in Chestnut Street.
The man was one of three men, aged between 25 and 33 years old, to be arrested for the recent housebreaking.
Primrose police were alerted to the incident by a member of the neighbourhood watch.
The member allegedly saw a maroon Mercedes Benz stop outside the house, and a woman climb out of the vehicle.
“The woman, who was wearing an orange dress, allegedly went to the house and rang the doorbell.
“When no one answered she returned the vehicle, which drove off,” explained communications officer for the Primrose police, Sgt Styles Maome.
The neighbourhood watch member explained that a few minutes after the woman left, the same vehicle came back and dropped off the three suspects.
“He claims the three men broke the gate of the house that the woman had visited minutes before.
“He called for back-up on the patrol radio and, together with another patroller, he approached the suspects inside the house,” Maome said.
The robbers, realising that someone was approaching the house, sprayed pepper spray to slow down the approaching patrollers.
A fight broke-out and one patroller, who was in possession of a private firearm, fired two shots at the advancing suspects, wounding one of the men in the left leg, above the knee.
The patrollers managed to subdue the suspects and the police were called to the scene.
During a search of the suspects police found jewellery, believed to have been taken from the main bedroom of the house.
“The injured suspect was taken to the Tembisa Hospital under police guard.
“The remaining men were arrested and appeared in the Germiston Magistrates Court.
“The injured suspect will be brought to court when his condition improves,” said Maome.
The men’s case was postponed for plea and trial.
