Raw sewage leaks in Primrose Hill

Family disgusted to find raw sewage in pool.

“The metro’s sewer line, located under our house, has been leaking since June 15,” said Steve Rees.

Rees, a Primrose Hill resident, called the GCN in a desperate attempt to get answers from the Ekurhuleni metro.

“No service crew from the metro has yet to arrive,” he explained on Thursday, June 25, 10 days after reporting the problem to the metro’s call centre.

“This is a very serious health hazard, a ‘river’ of raw sewage is now flowing into our pool and surrounding areas.

“I have called the call centre daily since June 15, and still nothing has happened.

“They just give the same response each time, which is that they are aware of the leak and will report it to the consultants.”

The GCN contacted the metro and received the following statement:

“It was found that the leak was caused by a sewer blockage overflow and not a portable water leak,” said Themba Gadebe, spokesman for the metro.

“A maintenance team has since been dispatched to do the repairs and it has been resolved.

“We found the sewer line was full of fats and that affected the flow in the line.”

The metro took 15 days to respond to the issue with it finally being attended to on Tuesday, June 30.

As for the health hazard caused by the leakage, Gadebe said, “It has been arranged that the sewage will be cleaned and the area disinfected.

“In addition to this, the metro will find out where these fats could have come from, and the responsible department will then take steps to prevent the problem from reoccurring.”
