Long-time Germiston resident passes away

In memory of Sarel Naude.

Sarel Naude was an extremely well-known man in Germiston.

He recently passed away.

He served as a councillor on the Germiston City Council and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality for 27 years.

During his political career he served as deputy mayor of Germiston between 1984 and 1985, and 1992 and 1993.

He also went on to serve as mayor of Germiston from 1988 to 1989 and again from 1993 to December 1995.

He served on many council-related committees and was an alderman of the Germiston City Council.

As a DA councillor he was a member of the Greater Germiston management committee and was made chairman of the Germiston constituency.

He was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by Helen Zille.

Naude was also an outstanding member of the Germiston Lions Club.

He served the club for 35 years, becoming its president three times.

In 2006 he was presented with the highest award in Lionism, the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award.

In his 85 years Naude never sat down to rest, he was constantly on the go, being chairman or a committee member of various organisations, such as the Dinwiddie High Governing Body, WABAC, SAVF Kowa Pienaar Old Age Home, Elsburg Dienssentrum and many others.
