Reliving the past with the 1 000 Bike Show

Calling all motorcycle enthusiasts to come along to this show.

The 30th annual 1 000 Bike Show will be hosted by the Classic Motorcycle Club, at Germiston High School, on July 4 and 5.

The 1000 Bike Show has grown from humble beginnings as a small display in the Carlton Centre’s Centre Court, in 1985, to what is now the largest dedicated motorcycle show in Africa.

The show has moved venue over the years to accommodate more exhibitors and visitors and has, for the past 14 years, been held at the school.

This year it is anticipated that about 450 classic motorcycles will be on display in the main tent, with motorcycles ranging from 1907 to 1985.

The display will include Ariel, BSA, Norton and Triumph, along with lesser known British motorcycles.

The European bikes are also a treat, including old BMW, Laverda, Moto Guzzi, Kreidler and Zundapps.

All the Japanese marques will also be there, including a special 50cc display, this year.

On the main field, other displays will be evident, including a Concours d’Elegance and a retro display of Café Racers and Bobbas.

Exhibitor badges are awarded for each motorcycle on display, with trophies for the best marque and the best on show.

The visitors’ motorcycle park also becomes part of the show – way more than 1 000 bikes in one place – hence the name 1 000 Bike Show.

It is amazing what you will see there.

There will also be trade stalls, food stalls, a beer garden and a live band.

The show is an ideal opportunity to call back the past, relive memories and see how the Classic Motorcycle Club strives to keep “Classic Wheels Turning”.

If anyone has a “classic” they would like to display, or would like to join the club, they may contact Hamish Ireland (chairman) for more information on 082 772 0141, email to chairman@classicmotorcycleclub.co.za, or visit the club’s website at www.classicmotorcycleclub.co.za.
