GCN shares some love at the Avril Elizabeth Home

A place of love to nurture and care for others.

The only word to describe our afternoon at the Avril Elizabeth Home is awesome.

The GCN team visited the home on Wednesday, as part of our community project, “City News Caring for the Community”.

We were greeted by the friendly staff and residents and made to feel at home at once.

The team visited the stimulation centre where we got to interact with a number of residents, chatting and playing with them.

During our tour of the home we also got to meet Garth, the home’s resident baker.

Garth has been a resident at the home for many years and he bakes all the bread needed for the home.

“I bake 48 loaves a day,” he said.

“I also enjoy baking raisin bread, hot cross buns and of course birthday cakes for the residents.”

The GCN team got to sample the bread and it was delicious.

We then went to the workshop, where the residents who live in the home’s cottages work.

The residents come to work every day and assemble various important items, for example battery terminals.

They were excited to have us as part of the “work force” and we were delighted to be there.

As a little fun for them, staff made icing and we got to help the residents create Marie biscuit masterpieces, as our assembly skills for battery terminals were not really up to scratch.

It was a most enjoyable afternoon, with the team having lengthy conversations with residents and getting to know a bit about them.

Every resident seemed happy to chat and to build “masterpieces” with us and it was a day that will live in our memories for a long time to come.
