Increase in electricity demand caused by cold weather

Eskom dismisses hoax statement about imminent blackouts.

Following the resurfacing of a viral statement about an imminent blackout in the country Eskom has release a statement stating these claims are nothing but a malicious hoax, aimed at creating unnecessary panic.

“The national power system has multiple layers of manual and automatic protection in place in order to prevent a national blackout from occurring.

“Load shedding is one of the mechanisms implemented by the system operator to protect the power system.

“The eventuality of a blackout occurring is therefore remote,” said Eskom’s acting chief executive Brian Molefe.

It is reported that the country’s power system is currently stable, with no load shedding implemented in the past seven days.

But, the company has warned that load shedding prognosis will be high for this evening with the cold weather increasing the demand for electricity.

For this reason the company has urged consumers to continue to use electricity efficiently in order to minimise the risk of load shedding.

“Efficient electricity us is particularly important as we are currently experiencing cold weather across the country,” added Molefe.
