Schoolchildren make a difference in their community on World Hunger Day

Tamlin celebrates World Hunger Day.

World Hunger Day is an annual event, celebrated on May 28.

The event, created by The Hunger Project UK, celebrates sustainable solutions to ending extreme hunger and poverty.

This is a plight close to the heart of Germiston’s Miss Earth South Africa 2015 regional semi-finalist, Tamlin-Jade Johnson (see GCN June 5).

To mark the day, she taught the children of Rebontsheng Primary School, in Vosloorus, Boksburg, the importance of the day and how they can make a difference in their own community.

Tamlin helped the students to make hanging gardens, reusing 2lt cold drink bottles; an addition to the vegetable garden she helped the pupils to plants recently.

“We planted herbs and flowers in the bottles and hung them outside the Grade Five classrooms, as these pupils are responsible for watering and looking after the plants,” explained Tamlin.

“As it was World Hunger Day, the children, teachers and I all enjoyed oranges after planting our hanging gardens.”
