“Winter has arrived in SA”

Cape cold front set to hit Gauteng by Wednesday.

A cold front that’s been lashing the Cape is set to hit Gauteng on Wednesday evening.

This cold front saw the Matroosberg Mountains received the first sprinkles of snow at the weekend, with the rest of the country set to experience cold wet and windy conditions later this week.

Weather services have reported that temperatures in Johannesburg will drop significantly, with a good chance of rain.

“Winter has finally arrived in South Africa,” said Forecaster Elizabeth Webster.

However, Eskom is confident that the cold front will not increase the likelihood of load shedding and this will only be implemented if its generators fail.

The company’s spokesman Khulu Phasiwe said that the cold front will undoubtedly lead to a spike in electricity demand, but insists its systems are prepared for this.

“When power systems are operational, we will not have load shedding,” he said.
