Police show girls their world

Girls get a taste of what it’s like to be police officers.

Girls from 15 schools in the Germiston Cluster policing district were excited to be in the “hands” of the police, on Friday.

The pupils from Germiston, Primrose, Elsburg, Alberton, Brackendowns and Bedfordview, as well as invited youngsters from Reiger Park, enjoyed a fun-filled outing at the Germiston Police Station.

Apart from guest speakers and speeches from the girls themselves, they were also treated to a special exhibition by the Germiston LCRC (Local Criminal Records Centre) Unit.

Lieut Jeanett Govender, WO Kobus Karsten, WO Nico Deetlefs and Capt Darren Bekker put together a wonderful interactive display of the tools needed for a forensic investigation to take place.

A “crime scene” was set up and the girls got the opportunity to see how the investigators would tackle each aspect of the scene.

The day formed part of the Cell C Take a Girl Child to Work Day events and the girls were given information about the various careers available to them in the police force.

A great day was had by all involved.
