Makwakwa delivers budget speech

What is budgeted, to what in the 2015/2016 budget.

MMC for finance Clr Moses Makwakwa delivered the 2015/2016 budget speech in the Germiston council chambers, on Thursday.

In addition to the increase in tariff rates, Makwakwa announced that the rest of the budget will be allocated in the following ways:

  •  Social support packages: R2.5-billion.
  •  Capital investment programme: R14.6-b, of which 40 per cent will be used to upgrade and renew infrastructure, 30 per cent for landscaping in the metro and 30 per cent for economic development.
  • Transport: R825-million.

Of which, R568-m will be used for the Integrated Rapid Pubic Transport Network, R93-m for the construction of four new taxi rank (one of which will be in Palm Ridge) and R40-million for buses to cover new routes in the east of the metro.

  •  Roads and storm water: R1.2-b.
  •  Energy: R1.4-b.
  • Water and Sanitation: R1.1-b, of which, 47 per cent will be used for new infrastructure and 53 per cent towards maintenance and repairs.
  • Human settlement: R579-m.
  • Community safety: R128-m, with an additional R100-m budgeted for the EMPD infrastructure programme.
  • Sports, recreation, arts and culture: R193-m.
  • Health and social development: R104-m.
  • Environmental resources management and waste management: R267-m.
  • Economic development: R67-m, with a further R82-m towards the promotion and facilitation of economic growth.
  • Bursaries and skills development programme: R26-m.
  • Information and communication technology: R89-m.

In conclusion, Makwakwa thanked everyone who had contributed to tabling this budget.
