Bringing joy to moms and babies

Fairy Godmothers spread some magic at local hospital.

A group of community-minded women paid a visit to the Bertha Gxowa Hospital, recently.

The Fairy Godmothers is a non-profit organisation which assists disadvantaged mothers by giving them basic necessities for their new-born babies.

The group visits government hospitals and gifts mothers of premature babies with a “going home parcel”.

Each parcel consists of a polar fleece blanket, a set of clothing (knitted, crocheted or sewn) which consists of a pair of long pants, booties, jacket/jersey, hat, vest and in winter a pair of mittens.

Also added are two disposable nappies, a face cloth for the baby, a bar of baby soap, toothpaste and a toothbrush and two breast pads for the mother.

“The mothers were so happy to receive their gifts and this brought great happiness to us,” said Louna de Beer, the group leader for Germiston.

“We are all volunteers and we all contribute in our own little way.”

During the visit to the hospital 25 ”kangaroos” were handed over to hospital staff.

The kangaroo is made of material and it allows a mother to carry her child on her chest.

The group plans to return to the hospital, where they will teach mothers to knit.

“I thank everyone for making the visit such a great success,” de Beer said.

Anybody who is interested in donating anything to assist the moms and their babies can contact de Beer on 083 453 0425.
