The SAVF Kowa Pienaar Home was filled with laughter on Wednesday, when the GCN team spent time with the residents and staff.
As part of the Germiston City News community project, called “City News Caring for the Community”, the home became our centre of focus for an afternoon.
The project sees the GCN team visiting different charities and organisations, for two hours, once a month to spread some smiles and care.
We were delighted to be spending the afternoon with the elderly residents of Kowa Pienaar who have so many stories to tell.
The home currently has 68 residents and the manager, Dawie Lee, told the GCN that on June 1, they will be welcoming their 70th resident – the maximum the home can accommodate.
Out of the 70 beds available at the home, they receive a subsidy for 48.
The home caters for the frail and disabled and residents are kept busy with various activities and groups.
The GCN team got to present some of the elderly with sweets and to chat to them and hear their life stories.
The day was a great success and one that we would love to repeat in the future.
