Community don’t feel SPCA did enough in recent dog attack

Another dog attack in Germiston.

The GCN recently received a report from Loma Du Preez of yet another dog attack.

The attack is alleged to have taken place in Apricot Street in Sunnyridge on Friday, March 13.

“The SPCA were called over a week ago by me,” Du Preez explained.

“I am one of PRAC’s (Primrose Residents Against Crime) directors and specifically told the operator that the dog will attack someone as it seems very aggressive.

“It even wanted to attack my car in the past.

“Still the SPCA did not come out, did not follow up with the owner and did not even give the owners a warning.”

The GCN contacted the SPCA to see what steps had been in this incident, Yvette Berridge manager of the SPCA replied to the enquiries with the following statement:

“Our inspector are aware of the problem of the pitbull getting out in Apricot Street, and have visited the site on numerous occasions.

“A warning was issued to the owner on Friday, March 13, advising him to keep the dog inside the property.

“However, the only action that we can take would be if there was a contravention of the Animal Protection Act, namely an abuse of an animal or an animal welfare issue.

“In the case of an owner negligently allowing their dogs to get out into the street and threatening to attach people is actually a case for the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department, as they are the ones empowered to enforce the by laws relating to animals.

“Our inspector has advised the residents around the house in question, on more than one occasion, that they should make affidavits stating that the dog keeps getting out and that the dogs dose pose an danger to pedestrians.

“Armed with theses affidavits our inspector has offered to  accompany them to the metro to ensure something is done.

“To date we are still waiting for these affidavits.

“As much as we sympathise with the residents in that area our hands are pretty much tied, as we can only take action if there is abuse to the dog.”

The GCN has also contacted the Primrose police to find out if a case was opened after the attack, to date the GCN is yet to receive comment.
