Who is vandalising local church and why?

Local church becomes target for vandals.

The members of the Calvary Baptist Church have become rather disheartened.

The church, situated at 48 Windsor Street, Sunnyridge, has become a victim of vandalism.

“We are quite disheartened that someone would go out of their way to destroy church property,” said Sue Kanniah, the wife of the church’s pastor, Edward Kanniah.

A few weeks ago, the outside tap was cut out, leaving a leaking water pipe.

Then the precast walls were attacked by the vandals.

“It would take tremendous force to knock down the precast walls,” said Sue.

Pastor Edward told the GCN that, over the years, the church has dealt with a number of incidents of vandalism, but over the past month the acts have increased.

“One doesn’t understand why people choose vandalism,” he said.

“Perhaps they have angst against God’s work.”

He is not sure why his church is being vandalised, but it is something with which they will have to deal and try to prevent.

In the recent attacks on the church, first two slabs of the wall were knocked out.

Then, last week, the precast wall where the outside tap is situated was knocked down.

“We are aware that individuals take water from the church, but we cannot understand the need to vandalise the property,” said Pastor Edward.

Sue added that the church has been in the neighbourhood for many years.

“The church family worships and enjoys fellowship despite cars being stolen from the parking lot and, now, these recent acts of vandalism to property,” she said.

“We want the community to know that we love people and we are serving God in the community.”

If anyone is aware of who is doing the damage, or for what reason these things are being done, they are asked to contact Pastor Edward on 073 101 0505.

If you see the vandals in the act you are also welcome to contact him.
