Make use of these drop-off kennels in an emergency

SPCA opens 24-hour drop-off kennels.

The Germiston SPCA has set up special drop-off kennels outside its premises.

These can be used by the public who find a stray after hours.

The SPCA, situated in Junction Road, Driehoek, is open from 8am to 4.30pm from Monday to Friday, and on Saturday mornings, from 8am to noon.

“We accept all unwanted, abandoned and stray animals at no fee, and your information will remain confidential,” said chairman of the society, Michelle Falgate.

“If you are able to bring your unwanted animals to us during open hours this is best, as it is far easier for us to find suitable homes if we have the animal’s medical history, temperament and personality profile.

“If, however, you find a stray animal which is not injured, out of our working hours, we ask that you call our after-hours line, so that the animal is safely received into our pound – the number is 082 675 0072.”

If you are unable to phone the emergency line, or the team is not at the SPCA for any reason, three after-hours animal drop-off kennels have been installed in the front garden.

To place a stray animal safely in the drop-off kennels:

  • Complete the forms kept inside the kennel.

If the forms are not completed and the SPCA staff has no information about the animal, they have to assume the animal is a stray and it must be kept in the pound for seven days before it will be put up for adoption.

This is very unfair on a previously owned, now unwanted pet.

If it is known that it was previously owned it could go straight up for adoption without delay.

  • Fill the water bowl with water supplied.
  • Place the animal in the kennel.
  • Close the door.

“We ask that injured or sick animals are not placed in the drop-off kennels, as it may be many hours before they are found by our staff, which causes unnecessary suffering for the animal,” Falgate said.

“Please do not separate mothers and babies, and please do not place baby animals reliant on mother’s milk in the kennels, for the same reason.”

Remember to always call the emergency line 082 675 0072 to alert staff to the fact that an animal has been placed in the drop-off kennels.
