Carnival City embraces darkness for Earth Hour 2015

Will you be supporting Earth Hour 2015?

Carnival City has pledged its support for Earth Hour 2015, committing to switch off lighting during the hour between 8.30pm and 9.30pm, this Saturday (March 28).

Areas that will be in darkness for the hour include the clinic, the Masana offices, the maintenance workshop, the Carnival and Jesters’ Bars, cashiering and staff rooms.

Solar lanterns will be lit in areas participating in this initiative.

Other non-essential lights will also be turned off, and Carnival City employees are also being encouraged to join the company in pledging commitment to the environment by switching off the lights in their homes for an hour.

Earth Hour is a global awareness initiative arranged annually in March by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), to highlight the role of ordinary people in preserving the environment and the world’s precious resources.

It started in 2007, in Sydney, and within a year Earth Hour became a global sustainability movement.

“The Earth’s precious resources and our environment are under strain from the impact of our modern lifestyles,” said the casino’s marketing manager, Michelle Smith.

“All people are being urged to limit their impact on the environment and to contribute to protecting the planet by living sustainably.

“We can make a difference by working together and every little bit helps.

“The process of producing electricity from coal is harmful to the environment.

“By curbing the amount of electricity we use, we can help to promote a healthier environment.

“Earth Hour demonstrates how easy it can be for people to make a difference, simply by switching off unnecessary lighting and using electricity conservatively, not just during Earth Hour, but every day.

“We hope to see Brakpan shrouded in darkness between 8.30pm and 9.30pm on Saturday.”
