Five pupils from Hoërskool Elsburg took part in the annual Con Spirito Arts Festival Public Speaking Competition, on March 14.

Byron Mabukwe (Grade 11) and Gugu Mdiniso (Grade 12) both achieved 86 per cent for their speeches.

Byron spoke about why social grants must be given to teenage mothers and Gugu had to stand up for the legalisation of abortion.

Nokwanda Zandi (Grade 12) talked about her views on body art, while Nomfundu Beje (Grade Nine) explained why mathematics literacy must be banned from schools.

Nokwanda got 85 per cent for her speech and Nomfundu received 82 per cent.

Hoërskool Elsburg’s headgirl, Kelly Minnie (Grade 12), received a staggering 90 per cent for both her Afrikaans and English speeches.

Kelly and Nomfundu received the awards for the best senior and junior public speakers from the school.

The pupils will take part in the Germiston Eisteddfod later this year.
