Shoot-out between hijackers and police results in recovery of vehicle

Police pursue hijackers.

A Germiston South resident was hijacked in his Galway Street driveway at about 11.20pm, on Saturday night.

“It is not known who called the police to report the incident, but Germiston SAPS officers were soon on the heels of the hijacked vehicle,” said WO André de Jager, communications officer for the Germiston SAPS.

During the chase, the suspects opened fire on the police and the officers shot back.

This caused the hijackers to stop and abandon the vehicle.

The police officers pursued the fleeing suspects on foot, but did not manage to arrest any of them.

While the suspects were fleeing, officers noticed one of them drop something.

The officers called the SAPS K9 Unit for assistance and a police dog managed to find a firearm.

No police officers were hurt during the shooting and the hijacked vehicle was recovered.
