New school hall a blessing

Milestone reached for Assumption Convent.

There was great excitement and thanksgiving, last Friday, at Assumption Convent School, when, after much anticipation, the new school hall was officially opened.

The master of ceremonies for the event, head prefect Diane Cilengi, ran the programme with great finesse and professionalism, making sure everything went according to plan.

Principal of the school Neville Workman told the assembled audience that, since the school was opened in 1946, they had always longed for a large school hall.

“In 2001 our mini hall was opened and this served us well, but the need for a larger space has always been present,” Workman said.

“The building of the hall started in December 2013 and, today, apart from a few finishing touches, the building is done, thanks to a collective effort.”

Workman went on to thank all those who played a part in realising the school’s dream.

The hall is simply named The Convent Hall and will be fully utilised for all aspects of school life.

“Hopefully this is just the first of many needed projects at the school,” Workman said.

The Archbishop of Johannesburg, Archbishop Buti Tlhagale, was due to officially open and bless the hall, but, unfortunately he fell ill just before the event.

This duty was performed admirably by Father Tony Daniels, the school’s parish priest from the Blessed Sacrament Church.

He said: “A lot went into getting this and you can all be proud of the fact that today you have a beautiful new hall.

“The school has grown from strength to strength over the years and let us continue building up the school together.”

Father Daniels blessed the hall and dedicated the building to the education of pupils.

“This is a place where they will learn in Christ,” he said.

During the proceedings the school choir entertained guests and then Sister Janine, an ex-principal of Assumption Convent School, unveiled the plaque naming the hall.

Pupils are looking forward to spending many happy hours in the hall.
