Time to clean up metro’s parks

The metro has promised to clean up all the parks in Ekurhuleni.

DA Clr Jackie Reilly has issued a challenge to Ekurhuleni’s executive mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele, to make good on his promise to see that all parks in the metro are cleaned up.

“The ruling party often talks the talk, but it does not always follow through on promises made,” said Reilly.

While it has been reported that the DA is thrilled that the metro has finally admitted there is a problem and has promised to address the grass-cutting backlog by mid-February, it has reservations that this goal will be achieved.

“If the metro is successful in this project and all parks in the metro are cut and cleaned, I promise to join employees for a day maintaining a park,” Reilly said.

“However, if the metro fails to cut all grass in all of the parks, I challenged Gungubele to do the same in a park of my choice.”

The DA is tired of excuses, ranging from broken down vehicles and equipment, to council running out of fuel, as reasons for the metro’s overgrown and unkempt parks and open spaces.

“The metro has time and again hired contractors who do not have the capacity to do the job, or signs contracts stipulating different responsibilities for the same job.

“For example, some contractors cut and remove the grass while others cut the grass and leave it behind when they are done, yet the contractors are paid the same amount of money,” she said.

Reilly has appealed to residents to contact her if the parks in their area have not been properly maintained, particularly if the grass has not been cut.
