Truck crashes into train

Two injured after truck collides with train.

The crew of an articulated truck had a narrow escape on Thursday morning when the truck they were travelling in collided with a passenger train in Driehoek.

“The driver of the vehicle suffered serious injuries but was in a stable condition, whilst his assistant escaped with minor injuries,” said William Ntladi, media liaison officer for the Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS).

“They were both transported to Union Hospital, in Alberton, by ambulance.”

The DEMS Rescue Team from the Germiston Central Fire Station responded promptly after receiving the call.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Refinery and Melville roads, in Driehoek.

“Apparently the truck was travelling on a gravel road, parallel to the railway line, to a construction site nearby, when the collision happened,” Ntladi said.

“All the passengers on the train escaped unharmed.

“They were all safely guided away from the scene to the nearby Driehoek train station to proceed with their journey.”

Ntladi added that the cause of the collision is still unknown, however, the police and Metrorail officials are busy with an investigation.
